Real Engineering Expertise for Your Boat

As a sailor myself, I’ve seen firsthand the shortage of genuine technical expertise across the marine sector here in Cornwall. All too often, marine electrical work is carried out by general electricians without specialist knowledge of boat systems. I even spoke to one who admitted he was “just a house basher who wrote ‘marine’ on the van.” That’s not how we operate at Crest Marine Services.

While many people working in the industry know engines and have picked up some electrical knowledge along the way, that only takes you so far. My journey started differently.

I began my career as an Apprentice Maintenance Engineer, working extensively on electrical and electronic systems, along with mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, robotic, and fire protection systems. Every day, I was responsible for keeping a busy manufacturing facility operational—repairing everything from modern injection moulding machines to 60-year-old vacuum formers, often working with relay logic and schematics written in German.
At times, the pressure was intense—whether it was 300 workers sent home waiting for us to restore power, or a million-pound contract on the line unless a machine could be repaired within the hour. That environment taught me how to fault-find quickly, fix issues properly, and ensure systems run reliably. It’s this real-world engineering experience that I bring to every job at Crest Marine Services—getting you back on the water safely and without unnecessary delays.

Later in my career, I worked as a Field Service Engineer on specialist vehicle conversions, including incident command units, air quality monitoring vehicles, and large fleet systems. I travelled across the UK, diagnosing and repairing complex electrical faults on-site, often working alone and with only the tools I carried in my van.
This kind of work demanded sharp problem-solving skills, self-reliance, and getting it right the first time—qualities that are at the heart of how I approach every marine electrical project today.

At Crest Marine Services, you’re not just getting a tradesperson—you’re getting a true engineer, committed to delivering high-quality, reliable solutions designed specifically for the marine environment.
